SPIDER VEINS, SCLEROTHERAPY...

TREATMENT OF SPIDER VEINS --

Spider veins or teleangectasias are one of the most common problems affecting millions of people today, mostly women. Although they can appear anywhere in the body they usually involve the legs and to a certain extent the face.   They are called spider veins because they look like a spider web or a sunburst and they are formed by abnormal connections of blood vessels underneath the surface of the skin.

There are two modalities of treatment:

SCLEROTHERAPY (or injection therapy)

The procedure consists of injecting into the vein a small amount of sclerosing solution with a micro-needle.   The sclerosing solution (usually hypertonic saline) will cause the vein to swell shut and then it will gradually disappear with time as it hardens.   Multiple treatments are necessary in most cases to get results which are usually present within two to twelve weeks as bruising fades.

LASER TREATMENT

A laser generates an intense beam of light, which is absorbed by the red blood vessels in the vein and the melanin pigment found in the skin.   The vein is destroyed by the heat of the laser beam, leaving adjacent healthy cells intact.   Works best in the face and with small diameter veins.  There is minimal to no discomfort during the procedure and any redness disappears in 2-4 hours.  Final treatment results should be evident within two weeks.   Our office is equipped with the latest laser which has recently been approved by the FDA for treatment of the teleangectasias of the face.
